A Path of Heart prides itself on maintaining a positive and non-judgmental attitude toward all gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered (GLBT) individuals and couples. Robin and Sol have many close friends who are GLBT individuals and are completely open and comfortable discussing relationship issues related to same sex couples.
Robin and Sol do not perform any type of therapy that attempts to change individuals from gay to straight and would like to reinforce the fact that there is no specific evidence that these methods -- also called reparative or conversion therapy -- are effective.
Same Sex Couples Present With Unique Issues
Many GLBT couples present with the same patterns and issues as heterosexual couples, however others encounter unique issues that impact their relationship including:
- Internalized prejudice. High rates of prejudice and homophobia can cause GLBT individuals to suffer from low-self esteem, anxiety, depression, and/or addictions
- The issue of ‘coming out’ and the problems that arise when one or both partners keeps their sexual orientation hidden
- Family of origin issues including attachment issues, lack of guidance and support, abandonment concerns, grief/loss, and abuse (physical, emotional, or sexual)
- The impact prejudices and stereotypes can have on GLBT couples with children or considering adoption or insemination
- Social isolation. Same sex couples often find it difficult to meet other couples for support and friendship
- Lack of healthy role models. Few couples have friends who can model what a healthy same sex relationship looks like
- Gender role socialization that impacts a gay men’s ability to be vulnerable and tolerate their partner’s emotions and makes it difficult for lesbian women to be independent within the relationship
- Monogamy or open relationships
- The impact of HIV or AIDS on the relationship and outside friendships
Robin and Sol use a research proven model called Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy to weave these unique dynamics into the therapeutic process and provide an all-encompassing service for GLBT couples.
GLBT couples in counselling will examine how prejudice and discrimination impact each partner’s inner belief system and the way it plays out in the relationship. Awareness of these unique issues will provide deeper insight and an ability to empathize and understand the inner and outer world of GLBT couples.
